Dr. Pip’s Bag is a canvas doctor’s bag with eleven wooden tools: a stethoscope, a thermometer, a reflex hammer, a syringe without a needle, an otoscope for looking in ears, tweezers, two fabric plasters, a bandage roll, a prescription pad and a name badge. Everything fits back into the bag, which closes with a wooden toggle.

Why doctor play helps

Children use pretend play to make sense of things that worried them. A child who has had a vaccination will often give one to every toy in the house that week. Playing doctor before a real appointment helps too: if they have listened to a teddy’s heart, a real stethoscope is far less scary. Paediatric nurses recommend it for children preparing for a hospital stay.

Wood, not plastic

The tools are turned from beech, with water-based colour accents. They are heavier and quieter than plastic tools and don’t snap. The stethoscope’s earpieces are linked with a soft cotton cord, so it hangs round the neck like the real thing.

Pairs well with

Story Corner is about letting children lead the story, so there is no script and no right way to use the tools. Expect the stethoscope to be used on the cat and the reflex hammer on a sibling’s knee. Dr. Pip’s Bag works for one child and a pile of soft toys, or for two children taking turns to be the patient.

Questions about Dr. Pip’s Bag

From what age is a toy doctor kit suitable?

From three. Dr. Pip’s Bag contains small pieces such as the plasters, so it is not for under-threes.

Can a doctor kit help a child who is scared of the doctor?

It often helps. Playing out an appointment with a soft toy lets children rehearse what will happen and feel in control. Many parents use it in the week before a vaccination or a hospital stay.

Is the bag washable?

Yes. Take out the wooden tools and hand-wash the organic cotton bag in cold water. Let it air dry.
