Pathfinder is a balance bike with a frame of laminated FSC birch, 12-inch wheels with air-filled tyres, a steel fork and a vegan leather saddle that adjusts from 30 to 40 cm. It has no pedals. Children walk it, then run it, then lift their feet and glide. That is how they learn balance, the hard part of riding a bike.

Why balance bikes replaced stabilisers

Stabilisers teach pedalling but not balance, which is why the day they come off is often hard. Children who start on a balance bike learn to balance and steer first, and most move straight to a pedal bike without stabilisers, often between three and a half and five. It’s also simply more fun at two: they go where they want at their own speed.

Air tyres, not foam

Many wooden balance bikes have solid EVA foam tyres, which are light but slip on wet surfaces and bounce hard off kerbs. Pathfinder has real air-filled tyres (1.5 bar) that grip on gravel, grass and park paths and soften bumps. The trade-off is that they need pumping now and then; a pump with a Schrader valve is all you need.

Sizing

The child’s inside-leg measurement should be 2 to 3 cm longer than the saddle height, so they can stand flat-footed. The saddle goes from 30 to 40 cm, which fits most children from two to five. A steering limiter stops the handlebars from turning too far, which prevents the most common balance-bike fall.

Moss or Bloom

Both have the natural birch frame. Moss has green grips and saddle. Bloom has warm orange ones.

Keep the frame dry when stored. Check tyre pressure (1.5 bar) monthly. Re-oil the frame once a year.

What age is a balance bike for?

Usually from about two, once a child walks and runs confidently, until they move to a pedal bike between three and a half and five. Pathfinder’s saddle adjusts from 30 to 40 cm.

How do I choose the right balance bike size?

Measure your child’s inside leg in socks. The saddle should be 2 to 3 cm lower, so they can stand with both feet flat. Pathfinder fits inside legs from about 32 to 43 cm.

Are air tyres better than foam on a balance bike?

For riding outdoors, yes. Air tyres grip better on wet paths, gravel and grass and absorb bumps. Foam tyres never go flat but are slippery and harsh. Pathfinder uses air tyres at 1.5 bar.

Can a wooden balance bike be left outside?

No. The birch frame is oiled, not weatherproof. Store it indoors or in a shed and wipe it dry after rainy rides.
