Otter Rapids is a co-operative board game for 2 to 5 players aged five and up. Four otter pups have to swim down the river to their holt before the heron reaches the nest. Everyone plays on the same team: on your turn you roll the colour die and the current die, then decide together which pup to move, whether to stop for fish, and when to risk the rapids.

Why co-operative games work with young children

Competitive games are hard at five. Losing feels personal, and an older sibling usually wins. In a co-operative game the whole table wins or loses together against the game itself, so the conversation is “What should we do?” instead of “It’s not fair.” Children practise planning, taking turns and listening to others, and adults don’t have to let them win.

Easy to learn, worth replaying

The first game takes five minutes to explain. Fish tokens can be spent to move the heron back, so there is always a choice to make. For older children, the advanced rules add whirlpools and a faster heron. A game takes about 20 minutes, which fits before bedtime.

Made to last

The board is recycled grey board with a linen finish, the pawns are beech, and the box is a sturdy two-piece tray with no plastic insert. Rules are in English, Dutch, French and German.

Size, materials and care

Size: 30 × 7 × 30 cm (W × D × H), 1.2 kg. Materials: Recycled board and card, Beech wood pawns, Cotton bag. Recommended age: 5 years and up.

Keep the box dry and away from radiators so the board stays flat. Wipe the wooden pawns with a dry cloth.

Safety

Tested to EN 71-1, EN 71-2, EN 71-3 and CE marked. Small parts warning: not for children under 3.
